1. Find three to five lawyers in your city who specialize in family law.
Interview all of them and hire the one best-suited to your needs and finances. Don’t talk to your husband’s lawyer or a lawyer that he suggests. You need your own lawyer who is committed to protecting and preserving your legal rights.

- Connections, connections, connections! A family lawyer in your city probably knows the family law judges, the courtroom personnel, and even your husband’s lawyer. These connections could speed up your divorce and make things run more smoothly.
Don’t call your marriage counselor, your husband’s therapist or any therapists involved in your divorce (i.e., child mediator). You need your own therapist or counselor to lean on in difficult times.
